Hey, everyone! Today, you get to meet my former co-worker, Hailey. She will tell you a bit about her journey and how she found medicine. Thank you for sharing, friend! Hope you enjoy the read.
Tell me a little bit about yourself. What is your main career goal?
I went to Virginia Tech undergrad as an engineering major, but engineering ended up not being what I wanted to do with my life. I loved all the biomedical type classes and had a job working in Radiology at the Health Center so decided that I wanted to try and get a job where I had more interaction with physicians and see if it was something that I wanted to pursue before going right into school so I applied for a job as a scribe in the Emergency Room which is where I currently work. I do plan on applying to schools soon since I have loved being in the medical field and would like to be a physician myself.
What’s a fun fact about yourself?
I fractured both ankles while sleep walking my freshman year of college.
My reaction:
Where are you in your pre-med journey?
I have graduated and taken all of the pre-reqs as well as my MCAT. Currently I am working in the ER as a scribe to get some experience and am applying in the next upcoming cycle.
What is your current job? If you are employed, tell me about a typical day and why you chose this job.
As I mentioned in the other questions I am currently a scribe in the Emergency Department. I chose this job because I have direct contact with different types of providers (MDs, PAs, NPs, nurses) and get to see a little bit of everything and learn more about medicine during my gap years. In this job I am paired with a provider for the day and go into patient rooms where I document their story, symptoms, and physical exams for the provider.
What kept you motivated throughout college?
My family was a big support to me throughout college supporting me in my goals.
How do you stay motivated now?
While I have enjoyed being a scribe, it’s not something I could do forever. Working with the providers I would much rather be on their side of work and that keeps me motivated to go back to school.
Finally, what advice do you have to students who wish to have a career in medicine or STEM?
I would definitely advise those with a wish to pursue medicine to get a job or volunteer in a position in the medical field. Make sure that you have the stomach for it, and it’s what you really want. I have seen many people who were set on a medical career realize that it’s not for them once they see blood or what the medical field is really like. Make sure it’s what you really want before you spend so much time and money on school.
What is your favorite inspiration quote or proverb?
“If you do well, I’ll give you donuts” – a friend who knows me very well
Thanks for visiting my blog! Be sure to check out my other posts. There is more to come soon! Until then be kind and remember tomorrow depends on what you do today. Hope you enjoyed reading! — Taylor ❤
