So I’ve been hunting for an ice cream that won’t cause me to break my low carb diet. I looked at different ice cream recipes, and none of them seemed appealing. I decided to google “keto ice cream” and Halo Top ice cream came up. After doing a little research, I decided to try some. I was hesitant at first, because I have had some failures when it comes to finding keto-friendly alternatives. Let me list them: Cream cheese cookies (yuck!), chocolate with 90% cocoa (so bitter, so gross!), and my not-so-great low carb cauliflower crust pizza (it wasn’t that bad, but compared to the real thing, c’mon! Not even close.) But I have not lost hope in my future recipe adventures. (I’m planning to bake some avocado brownies…I’ll tell you how it goes.) As a result of these recipe fails, I was expecting an awful, weird-tasting icy concoction. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I will point out a few things I found abnormal about the ice cream, but overall, I was impressed. Also, side note: yes, I still have my Christmas decorations up. It’s still Christmas in my heart. Anyways, back to the review.
Here’s the breakout of the macronutrients:
Each pint ranges from 240 to 360 in calories. Yes, the whole pint. Now, you have to read the labels to ensure the carbs are in your preferred range. Halo Top ice cream contains a little sugar but also has erythritol and stevia, which does not affect blood sugar. The ice cream has net carbs of about 6-8 grams, depending on the flavor. I learned how to calculate net carbs this past week. You take the total of the sugar alcohol and fiber and subtract that from the total carbohydrates listed on the nutrition facts. There is about 6 grams of sugar in each pint. I would not recommend this ice cream for a strict keto-dieter. They claim this ice cream is guilt free, but I have to point out: this is ice cream. In no way is this “healthy” or “good for you.” On the other hand, it is a better alternative for regular ice cream, which has way more calories and carbs.
Flavors
I tried 4 of the 26 total flavors (You read right! 26! Including seasonal flavors), which I purchased from my local Walmart. I brought Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Mint Chip, Cinnamon Roll, and Peanut Butter Cup. My favorite was definitely the peanut butter cup. It tastes just like Reese’s, my favorite candy. The cookie dough and cinnamon bun have little pieces of dough that were delicious. I felt like the cinnamon roll had overpowering taste of cinnamon, but other than that, it was okay. The cookie dough flavor has an abnormal taste that I can’t explain. It wasn’t awful, just a little weird. I found the texture of the mint chip to be super creamy, which sounds good but was a bit strange, in my opinion. If I had to rank them, I would as follows:
Peanut Butter Cup
Mint Chip
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
Cinnamon Roll
Overall, the flavors were delicious, and I definitely recommend trying a few flavors.
Price
The only downside to Halo Top ice cream is the price. It retails at $4-6 in stores. (Yikes! I know.) They are sold online for $7 on their website. (No, thank you.) I was able to purchase each for $3.88 at Walmart, due to an ongoing sale. According to a friend, they usually fill each pint to the top. However, when I opened my pint of peanut butter cup, it was half-way empty. For the price, I expect each pint to be filled to the top. I’m not sure if it’s because it melted or what happened. My friend was there when I opened it and was shocked at how much was in my pint. She told me to take a picture and send it to the company. I will do so and let you know how it goes. In the meantime, I will enjoy rest of my ice cream.
In the end, I definitely recommend that you give this ice cream a try! I found no major differences in taste between this ice cream and regular ice cream. It’s keto-friendly, but remember not to go overboard. Thanks for checking my review out! Let me know what you think if you give this ice cream a try. Here’s their website if you want to check them out: www.halotop.com. You can find these flavors at your local Walmart and probably any nearby grocery store.
